dc.description The scintillation efficiency of a number of crystals of thallium-activated sodium iodide has been measured. The crystals had thallium concentrations in the range 0·05-0·3% molar. The measured scintillation efficiencies of the crystals were compared with the values expected on the basis of the theory of Murray and Meyer, and consistent discrepancies have been found. The effect of strain, both thermal and hydrostatic, on the scintillation efficiency has been investigated, and the effects also found to be inconsistent with the theory of Murray and Meyer.
