dc.description The existence in alkali-metal-seeded rare gases of a mode of the non-equilibrium electric discharge with a constricted positive column is demonstrated and its structure is discussed. The positive column is shown to have a minimum stable current and to expand as the current increases in such a way that the mean current density remains roughly constant over a fairly wide current range. As the current rises, the column electric field falls, and is shown to depend inversely on the square root of the current. The energy balance of the column is discussed, and the fall in electric field with rising current is explained in terms of the heat losses at the column boundary. The gas temperature of the column is discussed and is shown to be higher than the temperature outside the column and to rise as the column axis is approached. The axis temperature is shown to rise as the current increases. The experimental observation that the mean electrical conductivity of the column plasma rises as the current increases, despite the fact that the column field falls, is explained in terms of the above facts. The effect on the energy balance and electrical conductivity of changing the rare gas is discussed, and agreement between theory and experiment is shown.
