dc.description Free burning arcs at atmospheric pressure in sulphur hexafluoride (SF<sub>6</sub>) have been found to be extremely unstable. For potential gradient measurements to be carried out the requirements for wall-stabilization of the areas have been examined and compared with those for nitrogen.
