The relative motion of particles and fluid is discussed in terms of the hydrodynamic interference between particles in a suspension, which ranges from a small effect in the dilute suspensions used in particle size analysis to a decisive magnitude in the permeability of packed beds of particles. The behaviour of clouds of particles, sedimentation and viscosity of concentrated suspensions, hindered settling and fluidization are briefly mentioned.
