The diffraction approximation and exact Mie theory, for treating light scattering by particles, are briefly compared for different sizes. Attention is drawn to the simplification of the screening function which occurs if the particles are opaque. Methods of measuring small particles in the presence of large ones are discussed and reference is made to new techniques for measuring particle concentration.
