The first radial eigenmode of a non-axisymmetric compressional wave in a cylindrical plasma surrounded by an insulating boundary has surface wave properties at low to ion cyclotron frequency. These waves are important for Alfven resonance heating because they couple to the spatial Alfven resonance which leads to thermalization of the wave energy. Antenna resistance and wave fields are calculated for a plasma with a temperature sufficiently low that the quasi-electrostatic waves excited at the Alfven resonance undergo strong resistive damping. The antenna resistance is calculated using the MHD equations and compared with the solution of the two fluid equations. The results are similar unless the Alfven resonance lies within about 1 cm of the plasma edge. The two fluid equations show that the btheta field, in particular, is enhanced for several centimetres around the Alfven resonance position. Experiments to test the theory are proposed. |
