An apparatus is described which is suitable for the investigation of the mechanical properties of gels and sols having relaxation times of upwards of one second. The material under test occupies the space between two concentric cylinders and is subjected to constant stress by means of a servo-mechanism designed to follow smoothly at slow angular speeds. The apparatus is calibrated using a Newtonian liquid of known viscosity so that the absolute values of the parameters specifying the mechanical model of the visco-elastic material can be obtained from the continuous record of the strain variation under constant stress. The determination of the constants of the spring-dashpot model to represent the properties of an aqueous solution of gum tragacanth is given as an example of the use of the apparatus. |
