A simple exponential drive mechanism is described which can be used with any prism (e.g. lithium fluoride, rocksalt, potassium bromide, etc.) or grating without alteration, to control the slit programme required to produce an approximately constant energy background. The control mechanism can be adjusted for various ranges of slit width settings so that any resolving power within the limits of the spectrometer may be obtained.
