An inverse rate recorder is described that can detect thermal effects to within 0.2° C. The instrument requires little machine-shop work, and is relatively inexpensive as it employs a standard commercial potentiometer and several common electronic circuits. The record produced consists of a series of straight lines. The position of each line represents a set temperature while the length of the line represents the time the sample required to change from the previous temperature.
