A symmetrically opening slit is described. It follows the principles of a design given by Roemer and Oetjen, but has modifications to suit its application to vacuum spectrographs, to permit the choice of various ranges of widths and to avoid certain workshop operations. A series of tests shows that such a slit is both reproducible and symmetrical in opening and has a linear relation between width and setting which is of remarkable accuracy.
