An instrument and method for measuring solar absorptivities of prepared metal samples is described. By means of comparing the cooling and heating cycles, when subjected to solar radiation, of a sample plate of which one side is a standard black and the other is the test surface, most of the usual errors are eliminated and a direct comparative measure of absorptivity obtained.
