In order to measure the slope of a curve at a given point, a vertical half-silvered mirror is set perpendicular to the curve by rotating it until the reflexion of one half of the curve in the mirror coincides as nearly as possible with the other half of the curve, seen through the mirror. The instrument is fitted with both a tangent scale and a degree scale and, in favourable circumstances, is capable of an accuracy of ±0.25°.
