An image intensifier is described in which a thin layer of selenium is placed in the electron microscope. The imaging beam causes the selenium to become conducting and potential restoration is provided by an auxiliary scanning beam which produces a television display signal. The device is extremely sensitive and useful images can be obtained with electron microscope beam current densities of the order of 10^-11 A/cm².
