A grating spectrometer designed on an Ebert mounting has been constructed which, with suitable photoconductive cells and a 6 × 6 in. N.P.L. grating, gives a resolution of 0.1 cm-1 in the range 6000 to 1700 cm-1. It covers the region 600 to 10 000 cm-1 with a single grating and is as simple to operate as a conventional prism spectrometer. It is intended as a high resolution general purpose instrument which will give a performance an order of magnitude better than that of a prism instrument over the main spectral range.
