The evaporation of an underlayer on the clean interior of a vacuum system enables the easy removal of subsequently deposited films by immersion of the coated surfaces in a solvent in which the underlayer is readily soluble. Lead iodide was found to be a suitable underlayer, soluble in a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium thiosulphate.
