dc.description It is common practice in sector mass spectrometers to focus the ionizing electron beam by using a source magnet. It has been shown that the variation of the focusing effect of this magnetic field with electron energy can produce an apparent `structure' in ionization efficiency curves. A technique for eliminating these instrumental effects, based on a theoretical consideration of the focusing conditions of the electron beam, is described.
