An optical plummet has been devised using cells of liquids as prisms whose apex angle varies with tilt. If liquids of appropriate refractive index are used, the plummet indicates the vertical direction independently of any moderate departure of the plummet itself from vertical orientation. The errors in tilt compensation resulting from the use of various fluids in the plummet are discussed and some practical uses for the device are indicated.
