A method is described by which the position of zero of a galvanometer can be determined at a distance. A precision equivalent to a fraction of a millimetre at 2 metres is easily attainable, and the fatigue of working is less than in the usual method of reading a scale. The method is applicable where a straight optical path between the galvanometer and observer is not available.
