Measurements of electric and magnetic fields and of optical radiation emissions from a glow discharge display globe are reported. This type of discharge globe can be purchased for domestic entertainment and display purposes. Reference levels for electric field strength recommended by the National Radiological Protection Board are exceeded at distances closer than 0.5 m from the centre of the globe. However, when the device is used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, this should not result in recommended exposure restrictions, which refer to current flow and energy deposition in the body, being exceeded. Optical radiation exposure limits for ultraviolet B and C radiations (200-315 nm) are exceeded close to the surface of the globe. However, with regard to realistic exposure situations, there is no optical radiation hazard.
