Field penetration depth in RBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-y</sub>, R=Y and Gd

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, lambda (T), has been determined by measuring the low-field magnetisation for RBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-y</sub> samples, where R=Y and Gd. The lambda (0) value obtained from the magnetic measurement was about 0.6 mu m for both GdBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-y</sub> and YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7-y</sub>. The lambda (T) was compared with the empirical law: lambda (T)= lambda (0)(1-(T/T<sub>c</sub>)<sup>4</sup>)<sup>-1</sup>2/. The results are discussed.
