Synthesis and sintering of Tl<sub>2</sub>Ca<sub>2</sub>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>x</sub>

The composition TlCa<sub>3</sub>BaCu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>y</sub> has been reacted to form the high-temperature superconducting phase Tl<sub>2</sub>Ca<sub>2</sub>Ba<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>x</sub>. Compacts were sintered in sealed containers from 870 to 925 degrees C in various oxygen partial pressures. Zero-resistance temperatures (T<sub>0</sub>) reached 118 K; the highest values were obtained from sintering in pure oxygen at 915 to 920 degrees C for 2 to 4 h. Critical current densities (J<sub>c</sub>) at 77 K in zero field reached about 700 A cm<sup>-2</sup>; no correlation was found between T<sub>0</sub> and J<sub>c</sub>.
