dc.description The application of high Tc superconductors, especially thin films, for magnetic lenses is discussed. If a thin film is patterned with a spiral, a small coil is obtained which can be utilized as a magnetic lens. However, because of field strength and rotational symmetry requirements, a number of the patterned thin films need to be stacked. The concept was first tested in a single YBa2Cu3O7-x layer patterned with a 50-turn spiral, having an outer diameter of 8 mm and an inner diameter of 2 mm. The width of the track was 50 mu m. The maximum current density obtained in this pattern was 3*104 A cm-2 at 30 K. The authors also designed a pattern suitable for face-to-face stacking. The alignment of the two stack components with respect to each other will be done by means of capacitive position sensors which are integrated in the pattern.
