Oriented thin films of YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>4</sub>O<sub>8</sub> prepared by pulsed laser ablation deposition

Single phase films of YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>4</sub>O<sub>8</sub> showing an onset T<sub>c</sub> of 80 K have been grown on MgO and SrTiO<sub>3</sub> (100) substrates by pulsed laser ablation deposition with an excimer laser operating at 308 nm. The optimum physical properties were obtained by growth onto a room temperature substrate in 260 mbar of flowing oxygen followed by a post-growth anneal in 1 bar of oxygen at 800 degrees C.
