dc.description Statistical and ergodic properties of a simple model of N hard discs in a circular cavity are investigated by means of analytical considerations and molecular dynamics computer simulations. The model exhibits ergodicity breaking at different densities as well as a kinetic crossover from hydrodynamic relaxation to particle exchange hopping processes. We calculate the associated densities over a large range of N. The threshold densities for the kinetic crossover are not correlated with the ergodicity-breaking density. For , the kinetic crossover corresponds to the freezing transition of the bulk system of hard discs. For finite N, we found that the crossover densities are smaller than the bulk freezing density. We finally discuss the relevance of our results for the glass and crystallization transitions in porous media.
