dc.description We investigate the phase of the transmission peaks of electrons in a single-channel system with a quantum dot embedded between the leads. The quantum dot is modelled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian of a cluster of a two- or three-dimensional lattice which is connected with one-dimensional leads. We derive an exact expression which relates the transmission amplitude to the bound states of the dot. It is confirmed that the abrupt phase changes in the transmission amplitude are associated with the transmission peaks and zeros. The phase at the resonance peaks is related to the parity of the corresponding bound states of the dot. On the basis of the exact expression a possible explanation of the in-phase features discovered in the experiments is presented.
