Light scattering by magnons in Bi<sub>2</sub>CuO<sub>4</sub> single crystals

The polarized Raman scattering spectra of Bi<sub>2</sub>CuO<sub>4</sub> single crystals were measured at temperatures between 10 and 300 K. In addition to the Raman-active phonon modes, two new structures at 14 and 150 cm<sup>-1</sup> appear at temperatures below 50 K. These modes, which are assigned as one- and two-magnon modes, have E<sub>g</sub> symmetry and E<sub>g</sub> and B<sub>1g</sub> symmetry, respectively. Their temperature dependences agree well with previous results of antiferromagnetic resonance experiments.
