The electronic structures of Cr<sup>3+</sup> ions on the Nb site and the Li site of LiNbO<sub>3</sub> were calculated under the actual site symmetry C<sub>3</sub> with the spin-polarized self-consistent-charge discrete variational X<sub>alpha </sub> (SCC-DV-X<sub>alpha </sub>) method. Special emphasis is placed on a discussion of the potential of LiNbO<sub>3</sub>:Cr<sup>3+</sup> as a tunable laser crystal. |
