A general theory of effective Hamiltonians, or spin Hamiltonians is presented that is based upon the theory of unitary transformations. The general properties of effective Hamiltonians are discussed and a representation independent form of perturbation theory is given that allows effective Hamiltonians to be constructed in any particular case.
