Pseudo-surface acoustic wave studies on MF<sub>2</sub>/GaAs(111) heterostructures using Brillouin scattering

We present here the registration of pseudo-surface modes, PSMS, propagating on MF<sub>2</sub>/GaAs(111) heterostructures (M=Ca,Sr), by means of Brillouin spectroscopy. The observed propagation of PSMS can be reasonably accounted for in terms of the simple theory of elasticity. Nevertheless, a lowering of 3-7% of the velocity values of the PSMS is detected in the case of leaky modes with relatively strong leakage. The observed deviations of the velocity of the PSMS are then thought to be connected with the presence of a region of roughness of the fluoride/GaAs(111) interface extending for several nanometres.
