The optical dielectric function of the ac plane of rare-earth cuprate (R2CuO4) single crystals in the energy range 1.2-2.7 eV is measured in reflection by a polarimetric method. The dispersion of optical anisotropy in insulating samples is described by two oscillators separated by 0.4 eV. Conducting samples can be identified by a Drude-like contribution. The sensitivity of the applied method allows us to test surface quality and the influence of electric transport properties on optical anisotropy.
