The authors discuss the present status of understanding of the EMC effect. This includes a brief introduction to deep-inelastic scattering and the present state of experimental knowledge. While most theoretical approaches are discussed, the emphasis is on attempts to include corrections which arise naturally in conventional nuclear models. These include Fermi motion, binding and contributions from meson-exchange currents.
