The possibilities and problems of studying nucleosynthesis and chemical evolution in the Galaxy by determining stellar abundances are illustrated in three examples-the abundances in solar-type disk dwarfs with various ages and kinematic properties, the light element abundances in Population II dwarfs, and the molecular abundances in circumstellar shells around carbon stars.
