An analysis is made of the contribution of unresolved 'sources', mainly active galactic nuclei (AGN), to the high energy diffuse gamma-ray flux using several approaches. It is shown that the AGN contribution is almost certainly the dominant source of this flux. The implications for the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays-which themselves generate gamma rays by interacting with the cosmic microwave background-are discussed.
