An overview is presented of mathematical modelling in the materials field, including accomplishments and challenges. It is suggested that while major advances are made in both the software and the hardware used in modelling work, and in the range of problems that are now being successfully tackled, most of the modelling work to date does not address the critical problems faced by the materials industry, namely the potential market for a new product, the trade offs between cost and performance, manufacturability and environmental impact. In this paper we cite examples of how individual processing steps have been successfully modelled and then clearly state the need for the combination and cross-linking of various modelling approaches, such as product, process, control, cost and environmental models |
