The instantaneous distribution of vibrating atoms and translating atoms in a simulated two-dimensional liquid was found to be heterogeneous. Groups comprising between twenty and fifty atoms move with respect to each other by a mechanism which resembles grain-boundary sliding by dislocation-like displacements. |
