Semi-Empirical Calculations of Fine Structure Splittings and Ionisation Potentials in the MgI Isoelectronic Sequence

A semi-empirical parametrisation of the singlet-triplet and fine structure splittings for available measurements of the 3s3p <sup>1,3</sup>P levels in the MgI isoelectronic sequence has revealed regularities which are useful for interpolation and extrapolation. By combining an extrapolation of the empirical gross energies, Slater integrals and spin-orbit splitting factors to highly ionised members of this sequence with available measurements for the 3s<sup>2</sup> <sup>1</sup>S-3s3p <sup>1</sup>P transitions, the positions of the members of the 3s3p <sup>3</sup>P multiplets and the ionisation potentials can be predicted.
