By solving the eigenvalue equation for the quark-antiquark potential which emerges from an effective dilaton-gluon coupling inspired by superstring theory, we obtain the spin-averaged energy levels of charmonium (cc̅) and bottonium (bb̅) and show that the masses of the cc̅ and bb̅ states are well in agreement with the available experimental data.
