dc.description Different In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanostructures, including nanowires, novel nanoarrows and nanorods, were synthesized through introducing the catalyst and adjusting the source material in the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) route. The morphologies and crystalline structures are characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The growth mechanisms of these structures are discussed. A competitive growth mechanism, bottom growth mechanism and vapour–solid (VS) mechanism were proposed to explain the growth of In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanowires, nanoarrows and nanorods, respectively. The growth mechanism analyses are valuable in understanding the growth behaviour of reagent species in the vapour route, which is very crucial to realize the controlled growth of nanostructures. Further, the obtained nanostructures have important potential applications as functional blocks in nanodevices.
