The thermochromism of the two-dimensional crystallites of the amphiphilic merocyanine dyes on the aqueous subphase is a structural phase transition. To show how the exciton absorption energy level of the dye crystal depends on its lattice structure, the eigenvalue equation of the energy level has been obtained as a function of the position of the lattice points under an extended dipole approximation.
