RECENTLY, one of us has advanced arguments¹ in support of the idea that manganese-rich deposits of the sea floor may result from the metabolic activity of a bottom-dwelling organism that derives its nutrients from organic complexes in the water. We present here some new evidence that is relevant to that concept.
