MR. HOWORTH, in NATURE, vol. ix. p. 201, advances the following opinions:â That volcanoes are found neither in regions of elevation nor of subsidence, but on the boundaries between them ; that the great continents are on the whole rising, and the beds of the great oceans on the whole sinking ; and that the centres of elevation are in the circumpolar regions.
