Cambridge, U.K.—As the British government ratchets up the pressure on universities to educate more students for less money, many institutions are turning to a new type of teaching assistant: computers. A government-funded project, the Teaching and Learning Technology Program, has resulted in the development of software packages that can substitute for laboratory instruction.
