The aim of this study was to consider the relationship between age and children's motives for participation in extra-curricular physical activities. In addition, this relationship was considered in relation to gender. The Participation Motivation Inventory was completed by 145 children who were students at a mixed comprehensive school. Results revealed age and gender main effects. It appeared that Year 7 and Year 10 children are motivated to take part in extra-curricular activities for different reasons. Boys and girls also reported differing reasons for participation in extra-curricular physical activities.
