Guttman's least squares method to obtain optimal scoring for a set of questions (as, for example, a Likert scale) is described along with a TrueBasic program that performs optimal scaling. The method yields the best scores (i.e., the most consistent with the empirical answers) and can be used to detect multifactorial items within the pool of items being analyzed. |
