While it was one of the arguments of the university emphasis that by being abandoned to the dictates of his own interests, his own passions, the student was being trained in the school of self-reliance, actually this did not always happen. Many young men and women knew the experience of being abandoned, but somehow the sensations of self-reliance never seemed to follow.¹
