The present study investigated the validity of Holland's theory in China, with particular reference to two key concepts—congruence and calculus. The study involved 409 secondary school students who were administered a Chinese version of the Self-Directed Search (SDS; Holland 1985c). The results provided strong support for these two elements of the theory. The types were distributed across six different fields of study consistent with the theory. The relationships among types hypothesized by the hexagonal model were fully supported by the results.
