By questioning conventional thinking, a sociological examination of air disasters directs attention to the broader, more fundamental political-economic context of these events. This research investigates the rates and patterns of air travel for a limited and defined population, National Collegiate Athletic Association teams for the period 1960-1984. The research findings indicate that the margin of safety among college athletic teams that fly is linked to both the social organization of aviation and the social struc ture of college athletics.
