It is argued that further advances in the usefulness of the age dependency ratio will be made only if we begin to take into account changes in economic productivity and real income. Such a change from current practice will improve understanding of the social and economic dynamics of aging populations and prevent the introduction of Malthusian ideology into discussions of aging trends.
