This research explores young girls' moral language about popular music. This work is interdisciplinary and draws theoretically from communication, cultural studies, and feminist developmental psychology. The analysis was in part an exercise in sorting through the multilayered and complex web of texts that arise from these girls' interpretations of their popular music experience. Further, this study examines the girls' constructions of morality and moral behavior in their stories about the demise of a popular music group, New Kids on the Block. This is a grounded study of Gilligan's theory of girls' identity and moral development. There are implications for educators to use popular music as a learning tool for young girls' exploration of identity.
