dc.description The middle atmosphere (stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere) is now being studied intensively. Mesosphere‐stratosphere‐troposphere (MST) radars are playing a vital role in observing middle atmospheric motions. These radars receive very weak echoes caused by scattering from atmospheric density fluctuations that are produced by clear air turbulence. These irregularities move with the local wind so that the Doppler shift of the radar echo power spectrum gives the component of the local wind along the line of sight of the radar beam.
